Rec Rooms Jazz and Blues - Diz Watson and The Doorman

13/11/2020 - 13/11/2020

As part of The REC Rooms Jazz and blues sessions we're excited to welcome Diz Watson and The Doorman.   Diz Watson, singer, piano player and entertainer, presents his exuberant mix of rhythm and blues and boogie woogie, often in the New Orleans style, encompassing the music of Fats Domino, Professor Longhair, Champion Jack Dupree, and all the way down the line to Cousin Joe Pleasant, blending it with his own quirky and often amusing originals. Diz recorded the classic ‘Bluecoat Man’ for Ace Records in London in 1981 with his band Diz and the Doormen, featuring legendary saxophonists Lee Allen, Roger Lewis and Walter Kimble who were with Fats Domino at the time. ‘Rhumbalero’ was cut in 1984 and ‘Tonky Honk’ with Big Jay McNeely in 1995, both on Ace Records. Over the years, Diz made appearances and worked with the likes of Chas n Dave, Clarence ‘Frogman’ Henry, Alexi Korner, Dr John and opened for the Stones, at the request of Ian Stewart, at the start of their l982 world tour in London. He also made a big impact on younger players such as Ben Waters and Henri Herbert, all successful in their own right. Charlie Hart (producer of Bluecoat Man) comments – “Diz is one of a kind, the coolest of Yorkshiremen, his influences are steeped in Blues and Boogie Woogie, and he is a connoisseur of the exotic, as his latest release ‘Diz-Connected’ certainly demonstrates.” As someone once said about his gig – “Be there or be somewhere else, especially if you need proof that the spirit of Professor Longhair lives on.” - - - - - - - - Quote : “Diz rocks the House every time – he is a bona fide British Blues Legend.” Errol Linton – Blues Man of the Year – (Boisdale).

New band alert! Matt Long and the Revenant Ones should definitely be on your ones to watch list. THE CHRISTIANS

30/01/2021 - 31/01/2021

The Christians are coming to The Rec Rooms! Described as "the Temptations in ripped jeans ......" by one rock critic, the Liverpool band's infectious melodies and warm harmonies have a deep emotional undercurrent. Feeding on accusations, protest, despair and even self-doubt, their "socially aware soul" made a big impact on the complacent music scene of the late 80s. The band's name came from the surname of the three brothers that were originally in the line-up (Garry, Russell and Roger Christian). It was also, coincidentally, their songwriter/guitarist/keyboards player Henry Priestman's middle name. Their 1987 double-platinum debut album, "The Christians", entered the album chart at No.2 and featured the Top 30 singles "Forgotten Town", "Hooverville, "Ideal World" and "Born Again". A sell-out tour of the major British cities followed, including consecutive nights at the Hammersmith Odeon, with additional appearances in Holland, Germany and France. In 1988 they released a cover of the Isley Brothers' "Harvest for the World", with all proceeds going to British Third-World charities. They also performed with other Liverpool artists Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson and Gerry Marsden on a version of "Ferry Cross The Mersey", released in aid of those affected by the Hillsborough football disaster. It stayed at No.1 for 3 weeks. Lead singer Garry Christian still sounds as good today as he did back then and the band are constantly touring as well as being invited to appear at many prestigious festivals. The Christians have made a name for performing a belting set packed full of the hits that bring back pure happiness and nostagia to the crowd. Described by Chris Evans as 'the best gig he's ever been to' The Christians are a reminder that not everything from the 80s was uncool! The surprising meaningful and appropriate songs combined with a voice that 'penetrates the soul' ... its not difficult to see why THE CHRISTIANS seem to be celebrating such a big resurgence! For more from The Christians you can head to their website here.

The Brand New Heavies

22/05/2021 - 22/05/2021

The REC Rooms are excited to announce that we're part of The Brand New Heavies UK tour for 2021.   Acid Jazz Royalty Simon Bartholomew & Andrew Levy are the original members of TBNH they are the main songwriters and Producers of the 16 top 40 hits singles and have sold over 2.5 million records. S&A 2017 Pioneers of the London Acid Jazz scene, The Brand New Heavies translated their love for the funk grooves of the 1970s into a sophisticated sound that carried the torch for classic soul in an era dominated by Hip-Hop. Formed in 1985 by drummer/keyboardist Jan Kincaid, guitarist Simon Bartholomew, and bassist/keyboardist Andrew Levy - longtime school friends from the London suburb of Ealing - The Brand New Heavies were originally an instrumental unit inspired by the James Brown and Meters records its members heard while clubbing the rare groove scene in vogue at the moment. The trio soon began recording their own music, gaining enormous exposure when their demo tracks were spun at the influential Cat in the Hat Club. Eventually adding a brass section, the Brand New Heavies built a cult following throughout the London club circuit, surviving the shift that saw the rare groove scene fade in the wake of acid house. After an earlier recording deal with Cooltempo yielded the single "Got to Give," the Heavies -- now including vocalist Jay Ella Ruth -- signed with the fledgling indie label Acid Jazz; recorded on a budget of just 8,000 pounds, the group's self-titled LP appeared in 1990 to strong critical acclaim, resulting in a licensing deal with the American company Delicious Vinyl. With Ruth now out of the band, Delicious Vinyl hand-picked N'dea Davenport as her successor, insisting the Heavies re-record tracks from their debut for their first U.S. effort, also an eponymous release that appeared in 1992. After scoring at home with "Dream Come True" and "Stay This Way," the single "Never Stop" soon landed on the American R&B charts, with the Heavies the first British group to accomplish such a feat with a debut single since Soul II Soul several years earlier; a subsequent New York performance augmented by rappers Q-Tip (A Tribe Called Quest) and MC Serch (3rd Bass) inspired the group to begin absorbing Hip-Hop, and that summer they cut "Heavy Rhyme Experience Vol. 1", an album including guest appearances by rappers including Main Source, Gang Starr, Grand Puba, and the Pharcyde. 1994's Brother Sister, which went platinum in Britain, was Davenport's last recording with the Heavies before beginning a solo career; she was replaced by singer Siedah Garrett in time for 1997's Shelter. Two years later, the group reappeared with a British best-of album entitled Trunk Funk: The Best of the Brand New Heavies; the title was recycled the following year for an American compilation, Trunk Funk Classics: 1991-2000, which featured a new song recorded with Davenport. In early 2006 it was announced that Davenport would be reuniting with the group. A new album, Get Used to It, was released later that year and was followed by a tour of the U.K. and Europe. ~ Jason Ankeny, All Music Guide   Advance tickets £30 (This is a standing only event)

Rhino's Revenge with support from Quo-caine

12/06/2021 - 13/06/2021

Having rocked audiences across the UK and Europe during 2019, Rhino’s Revenge will hit the road again in 2021. The title of the new tour is taken from the Rhino’s Revenge song of the same name. ‘Never Too Old’ was played for the first time during the band’s December, 2018, & proved to be an instant, sing-along hit. The side band of John ‘Rhino’ Edwards, bass player with rock legends Status Quo, Rhino’s Revenge will once more continue to support Save The Rhino International. “Thanks to the generosity of the people who come to our gigs, we’ve already collected a substantial amount for the charity,” says Rhino. “The tour was originally booked to happen during August and September, 2020”, he continues, “but Covid-19 had other ideas. It’s been a time of varying degrees of difficulty for us all but it’s not been easy for anyone. Health and safety is still paramount, but we hope our audience is as keen as we are to blow the pandemic blues away with some in your face rock ‘n roll.” With two albums of original material to its name – and a third currently in the making – Rhino’s Revenge brings songs from that repertoire to the stage alongside Quo favourites which Rhino has either written or co-written, some timeless rock classics and an element of the spontaneous unknown. “I do like to surprise myself and everyone else by throwing in a song which we haven’t necessarily even rehearsed before, in the heat of the moment,” he admits. Rhino’s Revenge is made up from a pool of stellar players, subject to availability, that currently includes Jim Kirkpatrick from FM on guitar and drummer Richard Newman, who has performed with Paul Rodgers, Rory Gallagher, Jefferson Starship, Steve Marriott, Alvin Lee and Glenn Hughes. “Paul Rodgers is my absolute hero and when he heard about my association with Save The Rhino, he signed several copies of his latest CD/DVD, gave them to our shared drummer, Richard, and we sold them on our last tour, with all proceeds going to the charity.” Having previously been a member of acts including The Climax Blues Band, Space and Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Rhino was invited to join Quo in 1986 and has been permanent in the line-up ever since. Tankus the Henge

12/11/2021 - 12/11/2021

Tankus the Henge have built their reputation on unforgettable songwriting, spectacular live performances and relentless hard work, playing hundreds of shows across Europe and building a devoted fan base along the way. “..I love that. It reminds me of a mixture of early Kinks, Squeeze and a bit of Blur mashed in. His voice is his own, …so great. I love it.” Dave Davies – The Kinks Their funk-fuelled repertoire is wildly eclectic, ranging from New Orleans inspired swing to heavy rock riffs, and since their beginnings in the ratty alleyways of London’s Soho, the band has evolved into a wild groove machine. Musically inspired by bands from the British invasion of the 60s and artists such as Tom Waits, Blur, Randy Newman and Queens Of The Stone Age, and with lyrics influenced by 20th Century American Literature, specifically the Beat Generation and Gonzo journalism, Tankus the Henge defy categorisation. Their hair-raising show, like no other, has to be seen and heard to be believed. Like a psychedelic, rock n roll octopus – only with four more legs.
