THE CHRISTIANS
The Christians are coming to The Rec Rooms! Described as "the Temptations in ripped jeans ......" by one rock critic, the Liverpool band's infectious melodies and warm harmonies have a deep emotional undercurrent. Feeding on accusations, protest, despair and even self-doubt, their "socially aware soul" made a big impact on the complacent music scene of the late 80s. The band's name came from the surname of the three brothers that were originally in the line-up (Garry, Russell and Roger Christian). It was also, coincidentally, their songwriter/guitarist/keyboards player Henry Priestman's middle name. Their 1987 double-platinum debut album, "The Christians", entered the album chart at No.2 and featured the Top 30 singles "Forgotten Town", "Hooverville, "Ideal World" and "Born Again". A sell-out tour of the major British cities followed, including consecutive nights at the Hammersmith Odeon, with additional appearances in Holland, Germany and France. In 1988 they released a cover of the Isley Brothers' "Harvest for the World", with all proceeds going to British Third-World charities. They also performed with other Liverpool artists Paul McCartney, Holly Johnson and Gerry Marsden on a version of "Ferry Cross The Mersey", released in aid of those affected by the Hillsborough football disaster. It stayed at No.1 for 3 weeks. Lead singer Garry Christian still sounds as good today as he did back then and the band are constantly touring as well as being invited to appear at many prestigious festivals. The Christians have made a name for performing a belting set packed full of the hits that bring back pure happiness and nostagia to the crowd. Described by Chris Evans as 'the best gig he's ever been to' The Christians are a reminder that not everything from the 80s was uncool! The surprising meaningful and appropriate songs combined with a voice that 'penetrates the soul' ... its not difficult to see why THE CHRISTIANS seem to be celebrating such a big resurgence! Tankus the Henge
Tankus the Henge have built their reputation on unforgettable songwriting, spectacular live performances and relentless hard work, playing hundreds of shows across Europe and building a devoted fan base along the way. “..I love that. It reminds me of a mixture of early Kinks, Squeeze and a bit of Blur mashed in. His voice is his own, …so great. I love it.” Dave Davies – The Kinks Their funk-fuelled repertoire is wildly eclectic, ranging from New Orleans inspired swing to heavy rock riffs, and since their beginnings in the ratty alleyways of London’s Soho, the band has evolved into a wild groove machine. Musically inspired by bands from the British invasion of the 60s and artists such as Tom Waits, Blur, Randy Newman and Queens Of The Stone Age, and with lyrics influenced by 20th Century American Literature, specifically the Beat Generation and Gonzo journalism, Tankus the Henge defy categorisation. Their hair-raising show, like no other, has to be seen and heard to be believed. Like a psychedelic, rock n roll octopus – only with four more legs.
